Pathways to Independence:

A Work Readiness Internship for Individuals with Special

Program Overview

This internship program is designed to provide individuals with developmental disabilities with hands-on training in real-world job tasks to build independence and increase employability. The curriculum focuses on essential work skills such as customer service, stocking, janitorial tasks, and workplace behavior. Interns will be guided by trained job coaches and supported in developing self-confidence, consistency, and social interaction skills.

    • Equip individuals with special needs with foundational work skills.

    • Foster personal independence and workplace readiness.

    • Build routines and expectations similar to competitive employment environments.     

    • Provide a supportive learning space with ongoing coaching and feedback.

  • Individuals aged 18+ receiving services through SDRC.

    Demonstrated interest or potential in working in entry-level or supported employment settings.

    Basic ability to follow instructions and participate in a group setting with supervision.

  • Length: 12 Months (Eligible for extension based on the availability of work locations)

    Schedule: 5 days per week

    Hours: 2 hours per day (10 hours per week)

  • The program seeks collaboration with:

    • Local businesses (retail, cleaning services, nonprofits)

    • Transition programs and school districts (for referrals)

    • SDRC service coordinators
